Our Story
Our partnership began in 2017 at Emory University’s Treatment Resistant Depression Clinic where we worked side by side, Dr. Crowell as a psychiatrist and Sara as a research coordinator. Together, we evaluated patients, collaborated on research initiatives, and developed a shared commitment to delivering thoughtful, omprehensive mental health care.
After several years of working closely, Sara pursued further training as a physician associate, while Dr. Crowell continued her clinical and academic work at Emory. Despite our evolving paths, our friendship and shared vision for integrative, whole-person psychiatry remained strong. Whole Self Psychiatry was born from that connection—a collaboration rooted in trust, clinical excellence, and a passion for helping people heal.

Dr. Andrea Crowell is a board-certified psychiatrist with a deep commitment to comprehensive mental health care that considers the whole person in the context of their environment and relationships. She is highly regarded for her keen psychiatric assessment skills and ability to consider neurological, pharmacological, psychological, and environmental factors to develop a (formulation). She specializes in treating mood and anxiety disorders, including for patients who have a history of trauma, severe or complex symptoms, or who have not responded well to previous treatments.
Before co-founding Whole Self Psychiatry she held multiple leadership roles in the Emory University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences: including Medical Director of the Emory Treatment-Resistant Depression Clinic, Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry Residency Program, and Director of the Outpatient Psychotherapy Training Program for residents. She also supervised a resident psychopharmacology clinic in Emory's outpatient services and was the director of TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) services at Emory Brain Health.
Dr. Crowell has numerous publications and has been recognized for her contributions to education and clinical practice with the Dr. Miles K. Crowder Excellence in Teaching Award, Emory School of Medicine Senior Physician Clinical Distinction, and American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Faculty Innovation in Education Award.

Sara Dover is a physician assistant and co-founder of Whole Self Psychiatry, with a professional background rooted in both clinical medicine and exercise physiology. She holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in exercise physiology, with graduate research focused on how physical activity can reduce depression symptoms and support long-term mental wellness. Her clinical experience spans several roles within Emory, as well as inpatient psychiatry and home-based medical care.
At Whole Self Psychiatry, Sara provides comprehensive, individualized care that reflects her belief in the power of combining movement, medicine, and meaningful connection to support whole-person healing. Her clinical interests center on integrating lifestyle interventions with evidence-based medication management to treat anxiety, depression, and other psychiatric conditions.
Sara has been recognized nationally by the Physician Assistant Education Association as a leader in education. Prior to starting Whole Self Psychiatry, she played integral roles in developing various clinical programs both in academia and the private sector in addition to starting and selling her own company.
